Smart smiles for small patients: Harnessing artificial intelligence for pediatric dental care

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer-based systems designed to simulate human intelligence by learning from data, recognising patterns, and assisting in decision-making. In paediatric dentistry, AI is increasingly being used to support dentists in providing more accurate, child-friendly, and preventive oral health care. AI-assisted diagnostic tools help in the early identification of dental caries, developmental abnormalities, and caries risk, allowing timely preventive and minimally invasive treatment, including interceptive orthodontics. In clinical care, AI supports personalised treatment planning by analysing individual patient data and improving clinical efficiency. Beyond diagnosis and treatment, AI plays an important role in behaviour management by detecting behaviour outcomes and using interactive applications, virtual dental assistants, and gamified content to reduce fear, improve cooperation, and create positive dental experiences for children. AI also strengthens dental education by delivering age-appropriate, engaging, and customised oral health information to children and caregivers, thereby improving understanding and encouraging healthy habits from an early age. AI has the potential to make dental visits less intimidating, enhance communication and support preventive care. It can be concluded that by combining technology with paediatric dental care, AI can contribute to smarter prevention strategies and healthier smiles for young patients, but AI can be used as a supportive tool, but cannot replace scientific judgement and critical reasoning.
