Presentation Title:

Early childhood, great suffering: Effects of Early Childhood Caries (ECC) on children's oral health and quality of life

Abstract

Early childhood caries (ECC) is a severe form of caries that affects the primary dentition of preschool-aged children. The repercussions of ECC extend far beyond the oral cavity and have an impact on the overall health and well-being of the child. The quality of life of parents is also affected, particularly due to daily stress, feelings of guilt about their child's health, and the professional and financial constraints associated with dental care.

Our study aims to describe the effects of early childhood caries (ECC) on the oral health and overall well-being of children and their parents.

The data was collected using two questionnaires. The first consisted of 18 closed questions and 8 open questions, while the second, the ECOHIS (Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale) questionnaire in Arabic, assessed the impact of oral health on the quality of life of the child and their parents through 13 questions.

In conclusion, this study highlights the significant impact of ECC on the quality of life of young children. It emphasises the need to strengthen preventive measures starting during pregnancy. Simple and appropriate advice should be given to parents at each visit to the dentist or any healthcare professional involved in early childhood care.
