Clinical profile of admitted pertussis cases in a tertiary government hospital in bataan
Abstract
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the Clinical profile of pertussis and to describe, analyze, and compare the epidemiologic, clinical, laboratory, status of pertussis vaccination, and outcome of pediatric patients admitted at a tertiary government hospital in Bataan. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was done which included patients with diagnosis of Pertussis; clinically, probable, and laboratory confirmed cases, admitted from March to August 2024. RESULTS: The chart review included 100 pertussis patients, 44 laboratory confirmed case, highest in those aged less than 6 weeks old (38%), with Male preponderance (57%) and 16% from the municipality of Mariveles. Patients who were eligible for vaccination, only 8% received complete DPT and 66% incomplete. 26% were not eligible because of age <6 weeks old. The onset of illness varied from 0 to 30 days, majority less than 2 weeks (86%). Leukocytosis was noted in majority of cases. The most common complication was Pneumonia. Case Fatality Rate of 12%. CONCLUSION: 44 laboratory confirmed cases were reported and most susceptible are below 6 weeks old with respiratory symptoms. Most common symptoms were cough, dyspnea, colds and fever. Infants who are not eligible and incomplete for DPT vaccine appear more likely to become infected. Pneumonia and Leukocytosis are the main components of pertussis
