Title: Personality of parents of adolescent with NSSI and analysis of cognitive regulation emotion strategies

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the influence of personality characteristics and cognitive adjustment strategies of parents of adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) on the prevalence of NSSI in adolescents.

Methods: Adolescents with NSSI who visited the hospital were recruited as the case group, and healthy adolescents in the school, community and hospital were selected as the control group, whose parents completed the Chinese version of the Chinese Big Five Personality Questionnaire and the Chinese version of the Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ-C), and then we evaluated the factors using logistic regression.

Results: Parents of the control group had higher scores of Openness (40.90±6.19), Conscientiousness (48.18±6.12) than that of parents of the case group (36.88±5.02), (44.12±6.58) (P<0.05). In terms of negative events, scores of Acceptances (15.28±2.50), Positive reappraisal (16.9±2.64), Refocusing on planning (16.33±2.46), Positive refocusing (13.58±2.81), and Putting into perspective (10.38±2.81) of parents of the control group were higher than that of parents of the case group (P<0.05). Among parents of the case group, Neuroticisms was positively correlated with Putting into perspective(r=0.305, p<0.05), Catastrophizing(r=0.370, p<0.01), Catastrophizing was negatively correlated with Acceptance(r=-0.291, p<0.05), Other-blame (r=-0.345, p<0.01), Openness was negatively correlated with Acceptance(r=-0.399,p<0.01), and positively correlated with Positive refocusing(r=0.303, p<0.05), Positive reappraisal (r=0.272, p<0.05), Agreeableness is negatively correlated with Other-blame(r=-0.363, P<0.01), and Conscientiousness is negatively correlated with Acceptance(r=-0.255, p<0.05)Extraversion was negatively associated with Positive refocusing (r = -0.323, p < 0.05). According to Binary regression analysis, the income of parents of the case group (OR=0.485), Education (OR=0.600), Acceptance (OR=0.590), Positive reappraisal (OR=0.454), Putting into perspective (OR=0.526), Neuroticisms (OR=0.810), Openness (OR=0.756), Conscientiousness (OR=0.738) are risky factors (P<0.05), Refocusing on planning (OR=2.089), self-blame (OR=1.545) are protective factors of NSSI of the case group.

Conclusion: The personality characteristics and the emotional regulation strategies in the face of negative events of the parents of adolescents with NSSI influence the prevalence of NSSI in adolescents.
