Title: Extraordinary measles incidents in the COVID-19 pandemic era

Abstract

Background: The increase in measles cases globally, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, raises several questions regarding the influence of COVID on the incidence of measles, which is a disease that can be prevented by vaccines. This study aims to determine the relationship between the incidence of measles during the COVID-19 pandemic era compared to the era before COVID-19 and the vaccination status of children who suffer from it to provide an insight into the incidence of measles in the period before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Method: Cross sectional using data from pediatric patients aged less than 18 years who were treated at the Ulin Banjarmasin Regional General Hospital with a diagnosis of measles based on clinical symptoms from February 2022 to November 2022–January 2023. Basic data was recorded from medical records and the data was analyzed using chi square to determine the relationship between vaccination status and the incidence of measles.

Results: There were 113 children treated, 173 boys (56%), 135 girls (44%), 208 (68%) not MR immunized, 100 (32%) immunized. There were 113 patients treated with a diagnosis of measles based on clinical symptoms, 88 (78%) were not immunized with MR and 25 (22%) were immunized, of the 25 who were not vaccinated, the majority were children aged 1-4 years, 18 people. The most common complication was pneumonia, the highest nutritional status was malnutrition in 22 children. In the results of the statistical analysis, there was a relationship between vaccination status and the incidence of measles treated at Ulin Hospital, Banjarmasin.

Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased the incidence of measles due to a decrease in measles vaccination coverage. Measles immunization coverage has not reached the target both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic era.
