Title: Navigating care: A comprehensive review of psychosocial interventions for caregivers of pediatric cancer patients

Abstract

The diagnosis of pediatric cancer is a traumatic stressor causing emotional and psychological distress for both the child as well as their caregivers. Several studies have documented the negative impacts associated with caring for pediatric cancer patients. The role of psychosocial interventions to aid caregivers of pediatric cancer patients is imperative. Thus, the study aims to identify and examine various psychosocial interventions which have targeted caregivers of children with cancer. It also aims to understand the outcomes of the various psychosocial interventions examined. The search conducted reviewed existing literature from PubMed, Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The review targeted randomized and nonrandomized study designs that included psychosocial interventions focusing on caregivers of children with cancer from 2013-2023. The results of this study identified various psychosocial interventions that help caregivers in terms of procedural assistance, problem-solving skills, and managing universal levels of distress inherent in pediatric cancer. The study identifies useful implications for psychologists and other oncology healthcare professionals to improve caregiver outcomes in terms of coping, well-being and quality of life.
