Title: Complications of ketoacidosis- one center experience. A case of a cerebral edema in a child with diabetic ketoacidosis

Abstract

In the last 20 years, there were around 700 children admitted to our department with a new onset of type 1 diabetes mellitus, 30% in diabetic ketoasidosis (DKA). Severe DKA was observed in about 5% of patients. Cerebral edema is one of the most serious compications of DKA. It developed in 0,5% of our pediatric patients. A 3-year-old boy was referred to tertiary center with DKA. The delay in the diagnostics contributed to development of diabetic coma with respiratory failure. The complications of cerebral edema included ischemic stroke and hydrocephalus. After initial treatment in ICU, the patient was referred to the endocrinological unit, where the personal insulin pump therapy was introduced. Within a few years of observation in out-patient clinic, he reached good glycemic control.

Biography

Anna Charemska-Ronchini is a resident doctor working in paediatric endocrinology department of a provincial hospital in Poland. She is passionate about clinical work with young patients. She is a professor assistant at medical university, sharing knowledge with student. She attended international internships in Europe and South America as well as volunteering in Nepal. She recently published author, with main focus of interest in type 1 diabetes and obesity in children.
