Presentation Title:

Nurse-led intervention program builds confidence regarding home care among mothers of solid organ tumor children

Abstract

Introduction: Cancer remains a major global health challenge, with significant disparities in access to care globally. Mothers, as primary caregivers, are central to managing home‑based care, but low confidence and limited knowledge can hinder recovery and exacerbate stress. Nurse‑led educational interventions, particularly video‑based programs, have shown promise in enhancing mothers’ knowledge and confidence, enabling the better management of complications at home. The study aims to evaluate the impact of a nurse-led intervention program on the knowledge and confidence of mothers regarding home-based care of children with a solid organ tumor.

Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 60 mothers of children with solid organ tumours at the Pediatric Surgery Ward of a tertiary hospital in New Delhi. The intervention group received a nurse-led video-based program on home-based care, while the control group received standard care. A structured knowledge questionnaire and confidence assessment scale were used to assess mothers' knowledge and confidence before and after intervention at one week and four weeks.

Results: The experimental group's mean knowledge and confidence scores were significantly higher at one week and four weeks than the control group (p<0.05). The majority of the experimental group demonstrated good knowledge at both time points. No significant association was found between knowledge/confidence and mothers' demographics. However, a positive correlation between knowledge and confidence was noted in both the chemotherapy and post-operative groups at four weeks (r=0.525 and r=0.729, respectively).

Conclusion: Video-based nursing intervention was effective in increasing knowledge and confidence among the mothers of children with solid organ tumours for imparting home-based care.
