Title: Non-inferiority assessment of the neonatal resuscitation and adaptation score compared to the Apgar score in newborns from the neonatology service of the Enrique Garcés general hospital during 2018 and 2019

Abstract

The evaluation of the transition from the intrauterine to the extrauterine environment of newborns is carried out through the Apgar score designed in 1953, it provides a quick evaluation of the clinical state, but it contains subjective variables dependent on the evaluator. The new NRAS score incorporates neonatal resuscitation interventions. The objective of our study was to demonstrate the non-inferiority of the NRAS score compared to the Apgar score. An observational, descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out that simultaneously used the two scores. The sample consisted of 396 newborns. The univariate analysis was described with absolute and relative frequencies. Bivariate analysis was performed using ROC curves for diagnostic accuracy and Wilcoxon, Chi-square, and Fisher's T tests for statistical significance. The predominant sex was male, the need for resuscitation was 35.6% and mechanical ventilation 19.6%. It was found that, for the diagnosis of asphyxia, the NRAS test was more sensitive and specific than the Apgar test and that it was not inferior to it.
